Please watch the first 2 minutes of the video. This video shows a good representation of childhood adversity which reminded me of Jeannette in The Glass Castle.

Jeannette lived a negative childhood where her parents had a tough time keeping a stable job. Lori and Jeannette were taking a risk by saving up to live in New York. Even when their father stole all of their savings, they were optimistic and continued to pursue for their dreams of having a successful career in New York.
Proof: “I knew it was Dad, but at the same time, I couldn’t believe he’d stoop this low. Lori obviously didn’t know yet. She was in the living room humming away as she worked on a poster. My first impulse was to hide Oz. I had this wild thought that I could somehow replace the money before Lori discovered it was missing,” (228).
Explanation: Lori and Jeannette have been saving up together for 9 months to fund Lori to go to New York after her high school graduation and Jeannette, the younger sister to finish high school and move to New York with her. When Jeannette found out that her father stole all of funds that she was saving, her immediate reaction was ways to get enough money in time for Lori to leave. Lori and Jeannette dedicated extra work and were able to get jobs over the summer to save up for some of the money that was lost. This shows that both Lori and Jeannette remained optimistic when they were approached with the challenge of their alcoholic father that stole their savings and managed to get Lori enough money to start a successful life in New York. |
Proof:
“‘Would you please shut up,’ she said. ‘You’re not nervous, are you?’ I asked. ‘What do you think?’ Lori was terrified. She was not sure what she was supposed to do once she got to New York,” (226). Explanation: For Jeannette to seek for success, she needed Lori to first overcome to challenge of going to New York alone. Jeannette shortly followed her to New York once she completed high school. Jeannette was able to follow her dreams, go to an ivy league college and work for a newspaper company. Even though Lori and Jeannette were terrified of going to New York, they knew it was the right thing to do. They managed to get away from their troubled childhood and become successful young adults. |
