Jeannette was very young when she encountered challenges. She was very mature, at age 3 she was cooking a hot dog and managed to get life-threatening burns. She never gave up and stayed in a positive mood when she was at the hospital.
Proof: “A few days after Mom and Dad
brought me home, I cooked myself some hot dogs. I was hungry, Mom was at work
on a painting, and no one else was there to fix them for me. ‘Good
for you.’ Mom said when she saw me cooking.
‘You’ve
got to get right back in the saddle. You can’t live in fear
of something as basic as fire,’” (15).
Explanation: While she was at the hospital she stayed in a positive mood the whole time and showed that she was resilient when she recovered and continued to make hot dogs at a very young age. Instead of having the fear of fire, she was fascinated by it. This shows that Jeannette was able to overcome a challenge of hers very early in her life, by doing so she felt like she was invincible and that nothing could stop her. |
Proof: “She smiled real big and brought in
other nurses so they could watch me chew my first-ever piece of gum. When she
brought me lunch, she told me I had to take out my chewing gum, but she said
not to worry because I could have a new stick after eating. If I finished the
pack, she would buy me another. That was the thing about the hospital. You
never had to worry about running out of stuff like food or ice or even chewing
gum. I would have been happy staying in that hospital forever,”
(12).
Explanation: Instead of most people wanting to leave the hospital right away. She always had a good mental attitude. This shows that she often never complained wherever she was and that she was a hard worker. Jeannette was able to make food and was not dependent on her parents even at such a young age of 3. By her being optimistic and allowing herself to overcome the fear of fire at such a young age shows that her future is bright and her childhood has no impact on the way she lives in the future. |
